Ghost announced their new tour with Volbeat and Twin Temple. I cannot put into words the Satanic ecstasy that a Ghost concert provides. Such moving music–it pales in comparison to the sound of the albums. I have been to a Ghost ritual before and I consider it one of the high points of my entire life. Twin Temple will also be present! I am so so so so excited.
Did my friends and I just get very good seats? Yes.
Do we live on the complete opposite corner of the country where this is happening? Yes
Does this mean things can return to normal baseline reality? I sure fucking hope so.
Picture walking through a decommissioned church, filled with artificial fog. A pale blue spotlight illuminates the thick air, and the shadows of tall columns and fixtures are blurred just out of sight. The fellow concert-goers amble around looking just as blurred and wraithlike as you do. The vast echoing chamber, once a place of holy worship, is filled again with slowly building, drawn out meditative chords reminiscent of Fauré or Saint-Saëns. A voice like a dirge emerges out of the haze, chanting words guttural and formless, that can only imply their meaning with the intonations by which they pierce the air…. By the end of a Sunn O))) concert, not only is your soul utterly destroyed, but your eardrums receive the stigmata.
“Why art thou silent and invisible Father of jealousy Why dost thou hide thyself in clouds From every searching Eye
Why darkness & obscurity In all thy words & laws That none dare eat the fruit but from The wily serpents jaws Or is it because Secresy gains females loud applause”
Fellow fans of Ghost will no doubt be glad when they wake up to a new Chapter of Ghost’s teaser series on YouTube. This series has been going slow and steady for a year and half already! Two new singles will be released tomorrow, Friday the 13th. This is the perfect thing to tide us over until The Director returns to the recording studio early next year. It is likely the next album has already been written out, and will probably be released next summer!
In Chapter 8, Papa Nihil reminisces about his own musical career back in the heydey of the 60’s, and a perhaps ill-fated performance of his hit song “Kiss the Go-Goat”. Take special note of a very pregnant Sister Imperator. While we obviously know who the father is, who will this child become?
In 1653, there was a fabulous spectacle which lasted seven nights. It was a series of ballets in Paris which totaled over 15 hours in length. The nobles, ambassadors, and even the bourgeoisie attended this opulent work, orchestrated by the Cardinal Mazarin, whose aim was to glorify the Sun King, Louis XIV, who at the age of 15 was only just beginning his long and magnificent reign as King of France.
Mazarin had employed the greatest artistic minds of France to participate in this event, from composers, dancing masters, and the poetic librettist Isaac de Benserade. This magnum opus consisted of four veilles, or night watches, all of which were oriented towards the culmination at the end–a grand ballet for the rising of the sun, played by the young king himself.
So why am I talking about it here? Because during the third veille (midnight till 3 AM), there is a Sabbat! This ballet has everything from Satan riding in on a goat, a dance-off between Ptolemy and Zoroaster, a choir of witches, flaming demons, and werewolves!
Enjoy this abridged version by Ensemble Correspondances, from 2015. The Sabbat begins at 1:53. The astrologer’s dance is at 1:32.
Last night was my first Ritual with Ghost–front and center! Devilish joy filled the air, and even though it was the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend, the energy was high! The Nameless Ghouls are so very talented and animated, and Cardinal Copia is a gosh darn good fellow. And of course, singing all the good old Satanic hymns at the top of my lungs while the Clergy are mere feet away was a religious experience for me. It was also very nice to have like minded people around. Ghost fans are good folk. I had such a perfect time 🙂
